Palliyodams
Palliyodam refers to the sacred snake boats used in the Aranmula Vallamkali, a famous boat race held annually in Kerala. These intricately crafted boats are an integral part of the cultural and religious heritage of Aranmula.
Key Features:
Design and Construction: Palliyodams are traditionally built from Anjili wood, featuring a long, narrow shape with a raised prow that resembles a snake. Each boat can accommodate up to 100 rowers.
Cultural Significance: Each Palliyodam is considered sacred and is associated with specific regions, or "Karas," in Aranmula. These boats are dedicated to the deity at the Aranmula Parthasarathy Temple and are believed to embody the spirit of Lord Krishna.
Rituals: Before participating in the Vallamkali, the boats undergo purification rituals and are blessed at the temple. The rowers, dressed in traditional attire, sing Vanchipattu (boat songs) to maintain rhythm and coordination during the race.
Community Involvement: The construction, maintenance, and rowing of Palliyodams involve the entire community, symbolizing unity and collective effort. The annual Vallasadya feast is offered to the rowers as a mark of respect and gratitude.
